Three local organisations are set to make an even greater difference in their communities after receiving support through the James Brown & Sons Community Fund. The latest funding awards will help tackle loneliness, improve wellbeing and strengthen community connections for people of all ages.
The James Brown & Sons Community Fund was established to support grassroots projects that make a meaningful impact in local communities, and this latest round of funding highlights the incredible work being carried out by organisations across Belfast and Newtownabbey.
Bringing People Together in Belvoir
Belvoir Community Association has received funding for its Belvoir’s Bingo Social project, an eight-week programme designed to reduce social isolation and improve wellbeing among older people, vulnerable adults and those experiencing poor mental health. The initiative will provide weekly social sessions featuring home-cooked meals, bingo activities and inclusive sports, creating opportunities for friendship, connection and improved mental and physical wellbeing. The project is expected to support around 40 people each week.
Supporting Older People to Stay Active and Connected
Engage with Age has been awarded funding for its Active Ageing Together programme, which will deliver exercise classes, social activities and befriending support for older people across Belfast. The organisation estimates that between 80 and 120 older people will directly benefit from the project, helping them to maintain their independence, build confidence and develop meaningful social connections. The programme has been developed in response to growing concerns around loneliness, inactivity and social isolation among older adults.
Sustaining a Vital Community Lunch Club
Funding has also been awarded to St. Comgall’s Church of Ireland to support its long-running Community Lunch Club in Rathcoole. The grant will help replace essential kitchen equipment, including a hot water boiler and refrigerator, ensuring the lunch club can continue to provide a warm welcome, nutritious meals and companionship to local residents. The club currently welcomes around 22 people each week and plays an important role in reducing loneliness and supporting wellbeing within the community.

Whether through social activities, community meals or programmes designed to keep older people active and engaged, each initiative will help strengthen local communities and improve quality of life for those who take part.
